Tony Underwood, Omaha, Nebraska: from Sioux City to the Navy to Cambium Data

Tony Underwood lives and works in Omaha, Nebraska, where he founded the managed IT company Cambium Data in June 2009. This page walks through the path that brought him there.

Growing up and the Navy

Tony grew up in Sioux City, Iowa, and joined the U.S. Navy after high school. He served as a Fire Controlman (FC2), and in 1991 he started working on the Navy's military computer systems. That is where he learned networking and where his IT career began.

Network engineering in Omaha

After the Navy, Tony moved from desktop support into network engineering and leadership roles at companies including MCI/Worldcom, West Corporation and DTN. In March 2001 he earned Cisco CCIE #7112, and in 2022 Cisco granted him CCIE Emeritus status.

Founding Cambium Data

Tony founded Cambium Data in Omaha in June 2009. The first customer was in Lincoln, so the company has worked in both Nebraska cities since it opened. In 2010 Cambium Data won the Cisco SMB Partner of the Year award, and today it is a Cisco Premier Partner. The company is Navy veteran-owned, and Tony still owns and leads it as president and CEO.
